HMS Beagle of 1820, Darwin's ship of exploration
Built by Woolwich Shipyards, the Beagle was launched on the River Thames on 11 May 1820. In July of the same year, as part of King George IV's coronation celebrations, she was the first ship to sail under the new London Bridge.
In total, HMS Beagle made 3 major voyages.
It was not until her second voyage that Darwin boarded her. During this second expedition, which lasted almost five years, Darwin spent three years and three months on land and eighteen months at sea.
The structure of the hull is made from laser-cut timber to ensure precision assembly. The hull, once battened with birch wood, is complemented by a wealth of fittings in wood, injected metal and brass photo-cutting.
