La BELLE POULE - 60-guns Frigate - 1834
The ‘Belle Poule’ was a 60-guns frigate of the French navy. Frigates were fast, multipurpose warships designed for speed and manoeuvrability. They played both a combat and an exploration role.
The Belle Poule was launched in 1834. She was one of the first ships to be built in a covered shipyard, which allowed builders to delay construction when political and financial circumstances were not favourable. Her design was inspired by that of the USS Constitution class of frigates. La Belle Poule was commissioned in July 1835.
La Belle Poule is best known for carrying the ashes of Emperor Napoleon I from St Helena to France.
